Daniel told Juan and me to go get groceries for supper!
Our cameraman Steve kindly drove us to Trader Joe's supermarket, but Juan and I are on our own at the parking lot.
When we entered the supermarket, a lady at cashier noticed us and asked whether we need any assistance, so we said yes, and waited for a while.
Then, a stuff came to us, and asked whether we want to go to aisles or just give her a shopping list and she grabs them, we chose the former.
The shopping list Daniel gave us is on Juan's iPhone and the list is somewhat vague, it's a good idea we go through the market.
Then, either Juan or a staff brought a shopping cart and I was told to grab the handle as she pulls the cart to guide me through the aisle. Juan is scanning around by clicking his tongue: He uses echolocation even in a supermarket!
This experience is a wake-up call to me because this is the first time since I became blind that I am in supermarket shopping! My parents never took me to supermarket because they believe a blind guy can't shop... or because I may knock down items on shelves so they never, ever take me to shopping!
Now I shall say it's possible because I am in America that they have wider aisle, but if someone pulls a cart for me, I can enjoy the shopping experience!
After getting everything, we were taken to the cashier.
The lady at cashier immediately recognised my long white cane, she started talking about an another guy who shop there... She must be talking about Daniel, and she says yes. I told her I am staying at his place to get some echolocation and orientation training, she wished me everything goes well.
As we were chatting, she handles money. It seems that she knows how to handle blind people: She reads out the bill I handed out and the change she returns to me. She is doing her job right; I trusted what she told me the how much she is handing, she lays the bills as she says the values on notes, then changes.
I thought relying on someone about handling money is a challenge, but I need to get used to trusting someone if I would live on my own...
さて、反響定位を使った歩行訓練を終わり、エコロケーションの感想を映像に納められたし、今日はこれで終了と思いきや・・・
フアンと私に、「スーパーに買い物に行ってきて」とダニエル。
カメラマンスティーブに車に乗っけてもらい、スーパーマーケットへ。ここからはフアンと二人、駐車場の真ん中で降ろされ、舌打ちをしながらスーパーマーケットの入り口を探します。
入り口から入ると、レジの人が私たちに気付いたみたいで、「お手伝いしましょうか？」と聞かれたので、お願いすることにしました。
すると、別の店員が登場。「一緒に売り場に行きますか、それとも必要な物を取って来ましょうか？」と言います。
今回はダニエルから買い物のリストをもらっているのですが、フアンのiPhoneの中にあるのと、リストがあまりにもいい加減なので、売り場に繰り出すことにしました。
フアンは舌打ちをしながら、店員の側を歩きます。エコロケーションで陳列棚をうまくよけているようです。
私はというと・・・ ショッピングカートを押しています。
カートの前には店員がいて、カートと私を引っ張ってくれます。
盲人でも、このようにカートを引っ張ってくれれば、買い物を楽しむことが出来るのに、と思いましたが、日本では多分、店員の数を最小限で回していると思うので、視力障害者のような買い物弱者のために、このようなサービスは提供しないでしょうね。
とにかくダニエルの買い物リストから探せるものをカートに入れ、レジへ。
レジの係の人は、私の長い白杖を見て、「いつもあなたのような盲人が買い物に来るわよ」と言います。
私は、その盲人が自分より少し背の高いダニエルという人で、現在彼のところにホームステイしていること、そしてエコロケーション（反響定位）のトレーニングを受けていることを説明すると、「頑張ってね」と励ましてもらいました。
ここでの支払いは、ダニエルからもらった現金。いつもはクレジットカードを使うらしいのですが、今回はダニエルが、盲人の現金の扱い方を体験させるため、あえて私に現金を持たせたようです。
レジの方は、どうやら盲人に対する説明に慣れているみたいで、合計の品数と金額を言ってくれます。お金を手渡すと、額面を言ってくれ、機械にかけて、偽札かどうか判別する機会？にかけます。その時、レジの諮問センサーに親指以外の４本の指を置き、確認します。
そして、おつりはまずはレジの人が数えてくれて、あとで私の手に１枚ずつ、額面と合計額を言いながら渡してくれました。
ここまで取り扱いが徹底していれば、盲人でもアメリカでの現金での買い物も安全なのではないかと思いました。
しかし、全てのレジの人が同じことをしてくれるのかは、疑問です。
On our way back to Daniel's home, Juan decided to take a bus.
To find a bus stop, we had to cross a street. As I learned from earlier on the same day, I crossed the street as I click my tongue, finding the building on the other street come close by.
This is a selftake snapshot for my very 1st bus ride in Long Beach.
I never thought it is free for ppassengers with disability!
In Fukuoka Japan where I live in, the bus fare is half off from regular fare for passengers with valid disability certificate, so I was surprised the bus driver did not charge me just by looking at my long white cane!
スーパーマーケットからダニエルの家までは、バスを使うことになりました。
ロングビーチで初めてのバス体験。
バス停に行くには、道を一つ渡らなければいけません。
先ほど習ったばかりの、エコロケーション（反響定位）を使って、対岸の建物に向かって舌打ちをし、その反響音を聞きながら、交差点を渡ります。
道を渡りきった後、フアンが近くの人に、「バス停はどこですか？」と聞くと、「あっちの方」と言われたので、その方向に向かいました。しかし、バス停らしき標識は見つかりません。
「こっち方向にはバス停は無い」と判断したフアンは、交差点まで戻り、また横断歩道を渡り始めたので、私はあわててフアンの後を追いかけます。
すると・・・バスのエンジン音が聞こえた！
そして無事にバスに乗り込みました。
それにしても、通行人が常に正しいことを言っているわけではないので、知りえた情報をどう判断するかは、盲人にとって必要な能力かもしれませんね。
ところで、ロングビーチのバス、運転手に「いくらですか？」と聞くと、「タダだよ」という返事。
なんと、ロングビーチでは、身体障害者のバスの運賃は無料！
これは嬉しいですね！
そしてダニエルの家に着いた頃には、夜遅かったので、この日のお料理訓練は中止となりました。
