Day 3 Walking with Echolocation - エコロケーションを使って歩く

On the 3rd day, Juan took me out for a walk, exploring things on street by echolocation.
I try to immitate Juan's tongue clicks, despite the fact almost nothing coming out from my mouth. Sure enough, pretending to do tongue click was not enough, I keep finding cars and bushes by touching them before finding them with echolocation...

舌打ち修行３日目。この日は朝から早速、今まで舌打ち練習した成果を確認するため、舌打ちエコロケーションを使って歩くことに。
今までと違って、フアンは前方に物が来ても何も言わないので、とにかく茂みや車に当たりっぱなし。
舌打ちをしてもフアンのように鋭い舌打ち音は出ず、我ながら困惑気味。



As we proceed to neighbours, Juan stops me and instruct me to click on my right.
As I click to right, I got a feedback of echo telling something solid is nearby.
Juan told me to scan for its height, and I clicked my tongue as I look up.
He told me to find the width, and I clicked my tongue as I turn my head to right and left...

Ah! That's a wooden fence!
I could hear a solid echo bounced off from the wooden fence!




なかなか鋭い、反響定位に適当な舌打ち音が出せないまま、フアンと近所を練り歩く自分。
すると、フアンに突然止められ、「右を向いて舌打ちしてみて」と言います。
言われるがままに右に舌打ちをすると、やや硬い音が帰ってきます。
そのまま右に向くと、今度は「高さを確認するから、上に向かって舌打ちして」と言います。
すると、自分よりはるかに高いものであることが分かります。
そして今度は、「左右に舌打ちしてみて。幅が分かるはずだよ。」と。

そして、なんとなくこの物体が分かりました。「柵だ！」
どうやら、木の柵だったため、かなり良い反響音が返ってきたようでした。




Next, he moved to an another object, and told me to trace the shape of it.
I knew it's a car, but it is hard to trace the body since the echo bounces off to other angles.
Still, I remember from movie clips on the internet that Juan and Daniel were showing to trace the line of a car, I tried to do my best.

If I can trace the shape of cars, I will probably be able to find the door without a sighted guide, or I can get on a taxi without someone guide to a seat!

次にフアンが連れてきたのは、別の物体。
「ボディーラインに沿って舌打ちしてみて」ということなので、トライ。
でも、舌打ち音は、前回の柵とは異なり、反響が直接返ってきません。
しかし、車の横の部分では、木とは異なった、柔らかな反響が返ってきます。これが、ガラスやプラスチックの反響音らしいです。

フアンやダニエルが、さまざまなテレビやインターネット上に後悔されている動画で、車の形を探るデモンストレーションを行っているようですが、もしこのスキルをマスターしたら、盲人がガイドヘルパーや家族の助けなしに、車に乗ることが出来る、また、タクシーなどを止めて、手助けなしに乗ることが出来るのでは、そう思いました。

For the first time, I had no idea what it was. I tried to click my tongue at it but I did not get a straight echo back... so, it's not a flat thing...

Then, Juan told me to touch it!

次の物体は、何か良く分からないもの。舌打ちをすると、何か反響は返ってくるが、あまり良く分からない。どうやら横には広くなく、上に高いようだ・・・
どうやら素直に音の反射が無いので、平面ではないようだ・・・ other object I encountered is this.




Ah! it's a tree! That's why I did not get a direct echo feedback but the sound travels somewhere around me!
なるほど、木の幹だ！それで反響がじかに返ってこなかったんですね！

こうして、この日の舌打ちヒューマンエコロケーションの実践訓練はスタートしたのでした。
