Finding a Bus Stop in Loud Traffic - 変えるためのバス停探し

After finishing the late lunch at California Pizza Kitchen, we left the restaurant.
Then, Juan told me we do some echolocation and veering training before heading back home.

Juan instructed me to find the other end of the mall, since I already came from south to north, now I am travelling west to east.

As myself an advantitiously blind, I am quite bad at drawing a map in my mind, whatsoever called mental mapping. I tend to lose the orientation since I became blind, Daniel and Juan want to correct the problem.

So, I click my tongue loud, and started walking towards the centre of the mall.
I found out that the aisle does not go straight from west to east, with some kiosks in the middle that Juan did not tell me... but my tongue clicks found these information and steered away from these obstructs and reached to the other end of the mall!

カリフォルニア・ピザ・キッチンで遅めの昼食を取った後、フアンが「帰る前にもうひと訓練するぞ」と言うので、その言葉に従うことに。
その内容とは、先ほどはモールを南北に歩いたので、今度は東西に歩く、と言う内容です。
そして私は、舌打ちをしながら歩き始めました。

モールの中には、色々なものがあります。通りの真ん中にお店のブースがあったり、真ん中が吹き抜けになっていたりなど・・・
そのような場所を、エコーロケーションを駆使して、障害物を避けながら歩きます。
舌打ちの反響音を聞きながら、左右から跳ね返ってくる音が同じ速さで返ってくるように位置を修正しながら、歩きます。こうすることで、物と物の中間を歩くことが出来ます。

反響定位、意外と使えるなぁと思っているうちに、モールの東側に到着。
その後、フアンに聞いたのですが、東西に伸びる通路は、真っ直ぐではなく斜めになっていたとのこと。
ということは、知らず知らずのうちに斜めになっている通路を、エコロケーションだけで歩いていた！

目が見えている人にはたやすい事とは思いますが、今まで来たこともない空間を、エコーロケーションだけで歩けてしまったというのは、すごく新鮮な感覚、というか、驚きでした！


Then, we left the mall, and started finding a bus stop.
I was leading the way to cross the parking lot to the street, but Juan took my part and start looking for a bus stop.



モールでの訓練の後、駐車場を渡るところまでは私が先導してきたのですが、道路の歩道に達したとき、フアンが先導して、バス停を探し始めました。
それにしても、大きな通りに面しているので、車の騒音のひどいこと。
さすがにここではエコロケーションは効果が薄いので、白杖をフルに使って、歩道を歩きます。

そしてカメラも、静かについてきます。



Finally, we found a bus stop!
For finding it, we had to cross a busy intersection that none of technique that I learned from the past does not work because it's a busy intersection and there are so many cars making a right turn on red light.
Juan told me we have to time the intersection by learning how traffic moves, and determine when the pedestrian light turns on.
While walking to cross the intersection, I was told to veer by hearing cars idling on my right and travelling parallel on my left.
Whew... what an experience!
Sometimes, we must rely on other sound sources!

そして、バス停に着きました。
ここまでたどり着くには、交通量の多い交差点を渡る必要がありましたが、そこがとにかく危険で難しい！

まず、車の流れを聞き、歩行者信号がいつ青になるか、そして矢印の信号があるかなどを、音で観察します。
そして、カリフォルニア州は、車は信号が赤でも、安全と判断すれば、車は右折できる決まりになっています。
このルールが問題。歩行者信号が青でも、右折車が来る可能性もあるわけです。
今まで習ったことを思い出すと、舌打ちをして反対側の建物を確認してから渡るのですが、交差点が大きすぎるのと、騒音が激しいため、その手は使えません。
そこでフアンが言ったのは、横断歩道と平行になっている車の走る音を聞きながら、右で信号待ちしている車のアイドリング音を聞いて、その間を歩く、というものでした。
これはエコロケーションではありませんが、周囲の音をじかに聞いて、その場で最適な判断をする。
視覚障害者にとっての音に対する認識を、改めて感じさせられました。



Then, we got off the bus at Long Beach Boulevard and walking towards Daniel's house.
そしてバスを降りたところ。ダニエルの家に向かって歩き始めます。
