Spoke about use of human echolocation at TEDxFukuoka 人間のエコーロケーションについて視覚障碍者として講演

It was a year ago when I spoke about use of human echolocation for blind photography at TEDxFUKUOKA. I had to rewrite my script as well as creat the additional slides and inserting the demonstration of panel exercise to show echolocation, all came up just a day before, which is the excuse for my nervousness and sluggish speech, but at least I was able to convey my message. 1年前の今日、TEDｘFUKUOKAにて、視覚障碍者として反響定位、いわゆるエコーロケーションをどう使うかと言うことで、日常生活での活用ではなく、あえて全盲でも写真を撮ることができるということをテーマに、講演させて頂きました。緊張していましたが、メッセージは伝えることができたかと思います。 やっぱり、前日に、原稿の後ろ3分の2を書き換えたのが、いけなかったかなぁ。本当はエコーのデモンストレーションをする予定はなかったのですが、同時通訳がいないということで、急遽一番最後以外のスライドと、反響のデモを入れました。

The 3rd Anniversary of My Theme Song! 自分のテーマ曲公開３周年！

It was 3 years ago when Jonathan Mann and Darrell Smith surprised me with a gift of my theme song! It includes my passion to blind photography, my eyes and echolocation! Though I gave up on acupuncture and massage therapy part, but everything else is pretty consistent!


今からちょうど３年前、Jonathan Mann (http://jonathanmann.net) と ダリル・スミス (http://daripro.com) が、この曲で驚かせてくれました。私が全盲になって、落ち込んでいるところにプレゼントしてくれた、励ましの曲、私の緑色の義眼に対する反応や、ずっと訓練してきたえこっロケーションのことなど、２分半に網羅しています。英語ではありますが、聴いていただけると幸いです。

Demystifying Echolocation in Japan! - 知られざる脳の真実！！世界を変える奇跡の力,、そしてエコロケーションの力。

Congrats on my friend and my first echolocation instructor Juan Ruiz for showing off echolocation through the TV show in Japan, this time, Juan actually visited Japan! After the show was aired, I could not help calling him to celebrate his presence in Japan! When I received my first echolocation training in Los Angeles as the first Japanese person in 2011 that I would like to see whether echolocation works in Japan, so I will try to get him to Japan… and the mission completed! Well done, Juan, let's spread echolocation so there will be an another opportunity for him to come back to Japan!

今週末、私が５年前に初めてロサンゼルスでエコロケーションを学んだときのインストラクター、保安・ルイズ（JうあんRういz）が、テレビに登場しました。これでエコロケーションについて、日本の皆さんに知ってkただける帰化になっていれば、これほど嬉しいことはありません。

先ほど電話して、お疲れさまと伝えました。いろいろあったみたいですが、また将来、日本を訪れて欲しいですね。

Echolocation Documentary Film Reunion

Reunion with Neil Abramson the filmmaker and Juan Ruiz, my first echolocation instructor back in 2011 whilein LA this time.

５年前に、日本人として初めてエコロケーションの訓練を受けたときを教えてくれた、ホワン・ルイズと、そのときドキュメンタリー映画の撮影をしたニールと、揃って再開。５年の月日は、得られるものも多かった反面、失うものもあります。これで私のエコロケーションのクレンンイ、一区切りつきました。

Oceanside!

On his new album release concert back in 2014, I promised I'll go to Oceanside pier and get the picture taken with the shirt with all supporting artist at the concert because the title of the album is… Oceanside!

２年前、ダリルのOceansideのアルバムのリリースコンサートで集めた、参加ミュージシャンのサインが書かれているTシャツを着て、本当に現地に来てしまいました！サンディエゴに近い、この小さな港町、潮風が心地よかったです。

Echolocation Training 2016 Day 3 Ryo Goes to Hollywood!? / ハリウッドでエコロケーションの訓練!?

For the final day of echolocation training with World Access For The Blind, I requested that I would like to explore Hollywood. I ended up exploring Dolby Theatre and the mall. From this day and the day before, I have almost no photos to share so it's impossible to prove that I was actually there. Go figure.

ロサンゼルスでのエコロケーションの訓練の最終日は、せっかくのロスなので、ハリウッドで訓練して欲しいとリクエストしてみました。確かにハリウッドの近くのショッピングモールに行ったのですが、ドルビーシアターの入口でちょこっと訓練しただけ。観光目的でリクエストしたわけでないのに、結局訓練もあまりせず、観光もせず、完全に無駄になった１日でした。ダニエル•キッシュが設立した団体、ワールド•アクセス•フォー•ザ•ブラインドの最後の訓練は、不完全燃焼で終了しました。後は、気を取り直して、カリフォルニアの友達と遊びます！

いちおうハリウッドの写真はあるのですが、わからないですよね!?

EcholocationTraining 2016 Day 2 Los Angeles Neighbourhood

For the second day of echolocation training, I requested to take it place near beach. Instead, I had to explore Brian's neighbourhood in LA. After all, it worked very well because it was a great opportunity to review all necessary skills to walk on a sidewalk with trees bushes cracks and water puddles, as well as different echoes coming from everywhere!

エコロケーションの訓練の２日目は、私としてはビーチを歩きたいということで、ベニスビーチを希望していたのですが、結局ブライアンの家の近所で訓練することに。基本に戻って、歩道の木や段差、水溜りを避けて歩く方法や、壁や駐車場、道路の向こう側の家などの反響音を聞く練習になり、いいエコロケーションの復習になりました。でも、ビーチに行きたかったなぁ。

Echolocation Training 2016 Day 1 Training with Brian Bushway 2016

I'm back to LA for the final formal echolocation training in LA. For the first day, Brian and I went to the park and concentrating on "hearing" instead of tongue clicking. Without being able to hear, there is no way we can echolocate! We tried clapping our hands to find buildings, trees and poles.

As usual (though this is the last time for us) to have lunch at Johnny Rebs after echolocation training. I'll miss this opportunity. The last photo is a photo with Kevin and Sam, the servers who have greeted me and remembered me since I started receiving echolocation training 5 years ago.

今年もロサンゼルスに、エコロケーションの訓練を受けに来ました。今回も付き合ってくれるのは、ブライアン•ブッシュウェイ。

今回は５年間続いたエコロケーショントレーニングの最終回、集大成は基本に戻って、舌打ちをすることではなく、とにかく聞くことに徹します。手を叩いて反響音を聞き、建物や木や電柱を探しました。

そして訓練んお後は、いつものおきまりのリブステーキ。過去５年間通い詰めたおかげで、店員さんともせっかく仲良くなれたのに、今回が最後になるとは、残念です。次回からは、ぜひ観光ついでに訪れたいですね。

Flying with JetBlue Blind

JetBlue Airways is not much known among Japanese, but it certainly is one of the best, for accommodating disabled passengers, from booking and arranging for an assistance, while checking-in, guiding to the tarmac to get onboard, hospitality during flight, and assisting to the arrival lobby!

When I had to do a round-trip to San Francisco from Los Angeles and back, I chose OAK-LGB instead of SFO-LAX and it was the right choice for less stress on ground transportation and smooth on and off the plane for a smaller airports.

The notable services for JetBlue is anyone at check-in counter knows and can assist people with disability, precise direction if they need to leave me in a waiting area, seated, and especially at LGB, they install a slope at the back of the airplane while regular stairs in front exit so I can take slopes while other passengers can board from the stairs!

My seats were 1D and 25D, the closest from the front for OAK for passenger boarding bridge, and 25D for slopes for Long Beach. I boarded too early, the crew offered me a drink and delicious brand cookies while others are still boarding!

When serving, a crew gave me a bag of chips. I told her I'd like to open it by myself so I won't spit the content if I hold the bag incorrectly, she just cut the edge and handed it to me, so I can tear the bag. What a hospitality! 

It's difficult to meet every single requests from disabled passengers, but JetBlue crews didn't mind listening to my requests, including taking some photos! I'm looking for an another opportunity to fly with JetBlue!

日本ではあまり知られていない、ジェットブルー航空。格安航空会社という位置付けですが、フルキャリア並みのサービスを低価格で提供しているキャリアで、日本でいう｀Fダ｀みたいな感じでしょうか。

この航空会社、障害者への対応が行き届いていて、びっくり

チェックイン窓口の人なら、誰でも解除を快く引き受けるし、安全な椅子やカウンターのそばに座らせて出ないと、カウンター業務に戻らないといけないからときちんと声をかけて、持ち場に戻ります。飛行機の搭乗も、地上からの登場でも、前後から乗ることができるのですが、前方はタラップ、広報はスロープなので、特別なリフトがなくても、楽に登場できます。日本人らしい老夫婦がいらっしゃったので、一緒に後ろから、スロープを上がりませんか？って声をかけて、日本でもこれがあるといいねと話しながら、登場しました。

そして、機内でポテトチップスの袋をもらった時、袋を開封して渡されたら、中身をこぼすかもしれないから、自分で開けさせて欲しいと行ったら、切り口のところだけ少し切り込みを入れて、渡してくれました。ちょっとした心遣い、感謝です。障害者とはいえども、できるところは自分でしたいというところを理解してもらえた瞬間でした。

ちなみに、登場橋からの登場の時は｀１D｀、スロープを使うときの座席は｀２５Dをアサインしてくれました。乗りやすく、おりやすい、しかも２５Dの時は、他の乗客が登場している間、ギャレーに避難して、飲み物とおいしいブランドクッキーをいただきました。こうしたマニュアルにないサービスが、JetBlueと大手他社のちがいなんじゃないのかなと思いました。

A Special Cocktail Service in ANA Premium Economy Service / エコノミークラスでのカクテルサービス

During the welcome drink service on ANA flight from Tokyo Haneda to Los Angeles, I requested some vegetable juice, even though it is not served for economy class on International flights. However,the cabin attendant never says no. Instead, she asked me to give her a moment, and she returned with a drink in her hand, saying "I hope you like it." It turns out that she created a vegetable cocktail with tomato, apple and orange juice! Though it does not contain any greens or carrots, it tasted as good as mixed vegetable drink! I admire her instant reaction to my request!

ANAのプレミアムエコノミークラスで、羽田からロサンゼルスまでの道中、飲み物を頼むとき、国内線ラウンジやプレミアムクラスと間違って、つい」野菜生活１０'といってしまいました。CAさんの反応は・・待つこと少し、お口に合えばよろしいのですがと言いつつ持って来ていただいたのは、トマトジュースとオレンジジュースとアップルジュースをミックスして作ってくれた、野菜ジュースカクテル！本当に野菜生活１００の味でした。

客室乗務員としては、国際線には置いていないので出せませんと断ることができたはずなのに、Noと言わないANAの客室乗務員には、ただただ脱帽です。
