With an interim cane and newly acquired cane technique, I hit the road, walking around the neighbour. Daniel told me to pay attention to my cane, not echolocation.
I wonder how he can tell I am making a good use of a cane if he can't see...?
ダニエルから白杖を借り、新たな杖の持ち方と振り方を教わり、早速と道に繰り出します。
「エコロケーションの事は忘れて、杖の振り方に集中して」という指示。その間にも、ダニエルの鋭い舌打ち音が近所にこだまします。
舌打ちだけで、道路上の障害物と私の位置を把握するなんて・・・すごい！
でも、私の杖の振り方がどうなのかは、さすがに反響定位では分からないようで・・・
Then, I get confused where I was going, and ask Daniel for orientation.
He already noted from my past training with Juan that I have an orientation problem, he draw a map on my back with his finger.
Some of you may think how a blind guy can draw a map, but Daniel told me he has a good 'mental map' in his head, he can draw a map as he use echolocation to locate things by imaging in his brain, so he never have orientation problems, even at the place he has never been before.
Whoa... I think my brain is not set for a blind, trying to 'image' everything with my old memory from my sighted days. It may take some time to change my perceptual acceptance of visual image to the audible image.
歩いていると、土地勘が無いからという訳でもなく、方向が分からなくなってしまいます。
フアンと一緒に歩いていた時からそうですが、方角が分からなくなってしまう問題。
今回は、ダニエルが背中に地図を書いて教えてくれました。
ダニエルに、「どうしたら方向が分かるようになるの？」と聞くと、
「エコロケーションを使って得た情報を、脳に取り込んで、「メンタルマップ」として記憶するんだよ。」とのこと。
まるで、テレビゲームなどで３D迷路ゲームを説くみたい。
メンタルマップをイメージとして描くことによって、初めての所でも一発で方角とかが分かるらしい。すごいなあ。
ダニエルから指摘があったのですが、どうも中途失明者は、見えていたときのイメージばかり掘り起こそうとしているのではないか、とのこと。
確かにそうかもしれない。
これから全盲として生きていくなら、「音で見る」能力を磨くと共に、音を聞いてどう脳内でプロセスするか、脳を鍛え上げないといけない、そう思いました。
さて、ダニエルとの歩行訓練中に、カメラマンスティーブに撮ってもらった写真。
綴りは違うけど、RYO ならぬ、RIO アベニュー！
RYOというのがアメリカ人に発音しづらいので、RIOと呼んでもらっているので、「僕の通りだ」ということで、ダニエルと一緒に、杖で指して撮影！
自分も自分ですが、ダニエルも意外とお茶目です。

When cameraman Steve told us it's RIO Avenue, we could not helping getting a photo taken with the sign, posing!Here is the proof!
