He wants me to trace cars parked in the parking lot without touching by hands and a cane.
For me, large vehicles like vans are easy to trace, but cars with hood and rear as well as pickup trucks are much harder because the hood, rear and bed do not return much echo.
If I learn to detect cars, walking in a parking lot would be much easier, and I can find my own seat without sighted people opening the door for me. I will eventually can get in a car if someone says, Get in the back seat!
風邪薬を買ってメキシコ料理店で昼食を取った後、フアンが今日のお題を出してきました。
お題は、「舌打ちで車に触らずに形を探る」です。
車から２，３０cmほど離れたい地から、エコロケーションだけで車の形を探ります。手を使ったり、杖で触れたりなど、おさわり厳禁！
バンなどのごっつい車なら、舌打ちの反響が大きいのですぐ分かりますが、セダンやピックアップトラックなどは、ボンネットやトランク、二台からの反響が捕らえられず、かなり難しい！
でも、これが習得できたら、駐車場で車を避けながら安全に歩くことが出来るし、ガイドなしでも自分で車のドアが見つけられ、乗ることが出来る・・・
As I am clicking my tongue at cars in the parking lot, a security guy approached us and told us to stop looking inside the parked cars and leave.
Juan told him we are practicing echolocation but the security guy mentioned someone called him and he/she does not appreciate us doing that.
Juan is totally innocent and can't understand why we had to leave, but as previously sighted person myself, I can easily visualise how we look like being in a parking lot, staring inside the car and looking for valuables...
Since Neil the cameraman said he has got enough footage from this scene, we left the parking lot and took some break at Starbucks.
駐車場で車に向かって舌打ち訓練をしていると、警備員がやってきました。
「君たち、何をやっているんだ？」と、警備員。
フアンが「エコロケーションの訓練をしているだけだよ」と、フアン。
どうやら、利用客から「怪しい人たちが、駐車場で車の中をのぞいている」という通報があったらしく、すぐに撤収して欲しいとのこと。
フアンは状況を飲み込めず、納得がいかないようでしたが、目が見える人にとって、車の周りを、車内を見るような感じでぐるぐる回っていると、泥棒が車内を物色しているように見えますよね？
フアンは生まれつき全盲なので、泥棒に間違えられるような感覚が無かったんでしょうが、私は泥棒に間違われることが多いので、いたし方ありません。
カメラマンのニールも、十分映像は撮れたということで、その場を立ち去ることに。
そして、スターバックスで休憩しました。
ちなみに、これはフアンから聞いた話ですが、アメリカのスタバカードには、点字が打っているそうです。
日本でも、ポイントカードやクレジットカードなど、点字打刻サービスがあればいいのにな、と思いました。
