After lunch, Juan and I, along Steve the camera guy, came back to the park to continue some more echolocation training: Finding a building and its corners!
Earlier in the day, I practised finding trees in the park and I thought I am all familiar with how the echo from trees sound like, but if the tree is located nearby a building, I trouble finding it before the building. It took a while to figure out the echo bouncing off from two different objects from different distance, but I figured out there is a more solid feedback from a closer object.
Also, I learned to turn my heads around and click my tongue to find the surroundings: aA tree would not return the echo but I should get some echo off from the building.
I found out I need to work on determining the distance from different objects in front of my face...
Then, I get closer to a building, and Juan gave an instruction to walk sideways, parallel to the building while clicking at the building and tell him when I don't hear the echo from the building... finding the end of the building.
I found the point that I don:t hear my tongue click, and also observed other passive noise like windblows and traffic from a nearby street, I was sure I came to end of the building.
Then, Juan told me to turn 90 degrees and keep following the building.
At some point, I suddenly observed the change of echo... I could hear my tongue click from all the sides... like wearing a pair of headphones and the echo is coming everywhere!
Juan told me I was in alcove so I hear the sound bouncing off from all surrounding walls!
Than, Juan told me to find one corner.
I paid attention to the echo that I heard through my right ear and approached to the point that I get the most echo feedback from.
Bingo! I found a corner!
Through this exercise, I have learned to find a building and measuring the width as well as getting the sense of distance from it. Though this practice did not make it perfect, I got the sense of finding a building with my tongue click and familialise to my click sound bouncing off from a large object!
After this, we walked in the park and I was trapped in a fence with metal leeds... I could not hear the echo from the that kind of wall, but Juan could. The metal leed fence sounded like a translucent wall to me... so I ended up finding it by pushing it hard on my face! I wonder whether I could echolocate such fences without touching in future like Juan...
チーズステーキサンドイッチでお腹を満たした後は、ダニエルは雑用のために家に戻り、フアンと私とカメラマンのスティーブは公演に戻って舌打ちエコロケーションの特訓。
午後の訓練は、舌打ちで建物を探すこと、そして建物の端を聞き分けることです。
公演の駐車場から、公園に生えている木を、舌打ちをしながらよけていきます。
「我ながらけっこうエコロケーションできるじゃん」と思いながら進んでいくと、建物らしきところの前でゴツン。
「あれっ？」と思ったら、どうやら建物の前に木があったようで、自分の未熟な舌打ちの反響定位では、自分と建物と、その間にある木との距離感が全く無いことに気づきました。
今まで、目の前にあった物体は１つだけ。目の前に２つ以上の物体のエコロケーションは初めてです。
ここでフアンが「手前から返ってくる反響と、少し遅れて帰ってくる幅広い物体からの反響を聞き分けて」というアドバイス。
さらに、「左右それぞれに舌打ちをしたら、手前に木があることがすぐにあるはずだ」と教えてくれます。
なるほど、正面しか舌打ちしないときと比べて、首を振って舌打ちをしたほうが、立体的に空間を把握できるような気がします。
そして建物に近づいて、今度は建物に平行に、舌打ちをしながらかに歩き。でも、指はチョキチョキしません。
そのまま横方向に進んでいくと、ある地点を境に、自分の舌打ちの反響音が聞こえなくなりました。かわりに、「受動的な反響音・パッシブソナー」というか、風の吹く音や近くの通りを通る車の音が耳に入ります。
「ここが建物の端ですね」「その通り」
ここから９０度曲がり、引き続き建物に向かい、舌打ちをしながらカニ歩き。すると、いきなり反響が響く空間に出ました。何か、ヘッドホンをして音を聞いているような感覚。
「袋小路だね」と、フアンは言います。
いわゆる、３方向が壁で、それに向かって舌打ちをすると、お互いの反響音が跳ね返り、増幅して耳に入ってくるということです。
「右端の角を探してご覧」とフアン。
右耳から入ってくる音に集中して、横からの反響音に気をつけながら、反響音が一番重複して聞こえる点を、舌打ちをしながら探します。
「ここだ！」と私。
建物のエコロケーションは、建物に平行して歩くときの目安になるだけでなく、視覚が使えない文、音を使って構造を把握する、重要なスキルだと感じました。
これをマスターすれば、迷路にも挑戦できる！？
なお、この後、公園を散策しましたが、金網で囲まれた空間に迷い込みます。
金網はご存知の通りスケスケなので、反響音がほとんど返ってきません。
なので、私は見事金網にキスしてしまいました。
でも、フアンは微妙な舌打ち音の反響で、金網の存在を知っていたとの事。
自分は舌打ちエコロケーション３日生。ヒューマンエコロケーションの奥深さを知った瞬間でもありました。
