Exploring Inside the Community College with Echolocation - エコロケーションで地元のコミュニティーカレッジ内を歩く

After some break, we are relocated to Long Beach City College for more perceptual mobility training with echolocation.

After we arrive at the college parking lot, Juan instructed me to find the campus building.
I clapped my hand, and slowly approach to where I hear the echo... about 30m / 100ft. away.

After finding the building, Juan told me to find the entrance.
I tried to find a cue, and heard the door opening and some people exiting from the door.
I approached to the door and opened it...


What I found was a big room, but as I click my tongue, I hear some feedback around, so I was surrounded by a wall.
Hmmmm... where am I???


午後の舌打ち歩行訓練は、地元のコミュニティカレッジで行うことになりました。
ロングビーチシティカレッジの駐車場に移動。車から降りたら、早速フアンが「建物を見つけてごらん」と言うので、手拍子をしてみます。そして、反響が一番帰ってくる方向に向かって歩き始めました。
多分１００メートルくらい歩いたでしょうか、やっと建物を見つけました。
そしてフアンは建物の入り口を見つけるように言います。
そこで、舌打ちをしても分からないだろうから、周りの音を聞いて観察します。
すると、ある地点から、人々がドアを開けて出てくるのが聞こえます。
その音の方向に近づいて、ドアを開け、中に入ります。

すると、なんだかだだっ広い空間に迷い込みました。
舌打ちをすると、三方向から反響が返ってきます。

どこに迷い込んだかと言うと・・・

I later found desks and chairs...

We proceeded to the other side and opened the door to get to a hallway, where Juan taught me about different echos from different part of the building like alcoves and corners.

なんとそこは、教室でした！
授業はあっていないらしく、物静かな空間です。
机や椅子もあるようです。

一通り確認した後、廊下へと出て、行き止まりの地点や曲がり角などをエコロケーションで見つける方法を、、フアンに習いました。

Next, Juan gave me a new assignment... learn to walk in the middle of the aisle!

In order to do that, I should click my tongue, hear the sound bouncing off from the side of the wall, and center myself by paying attention to the amount of echo I hear from the both sides.
Then, walk straight as I click my tongue, but not to disturb some classrooms that are holding classes by reducing the tongue click sound but audible enough to keep me straight to walk down the aisle.

After all, I become more confident in walking indoors, down the aisles and explore around!


それから、フアンが新しい課題を突きつけてきました。
「廊下の真ん中を真っ直ぐ歩く」

日本では、視覚障害者が建物内を歩くときは、建物の端を、、壁を触りながら歩くように教えられますが、フアンが言っているのは、その逆。真ん中を歩けってことで、本当に良いかどうかは別として、生徒が行きかう廊下を歩いてみることにしました。

私が真ん中にいるかどうかの確認には、エコロケーションを使います。
舌打ちをしてみて、左右からの反響音を聞き、左右両方からの反響のタイミングが同じところが、中央と言うことになります。
それから、舌打ちをしながら、左右からの反響が同じタイミングで返ってくることを確認しながら、歩きます。
歩いているとき、突然一方からの反響が近くなったら、人がいるか物があると言うことになります。

最初は恐る恐る歩いていたのですが、慣れてくると、通路の真ん中は障害物が比較的少なく、歩きやすい！
お陰で、室内の歩行に少し自信が持てるようになりました。





After training at the college, we took some break at Jumba Juice before heading back to Daniel's house.

コミュニティカレッジでの訓練の帰り、絞りたてのジュースを飲んで帰りました。
