Clicker -

After Daniel giving me new canes, he brought a small device called clicker. It has the size of a thumb and it makes a loud click noise.

Clicker Closeup

This is a small device that is to be used when training dogs, but it makes ideal click sound for human echolocation.
With this, I can make a loud audible click sound even in a noisy place!

Daniel and Me with a Clicker

Daniel told me if we have a clicker, meeting in public place would be much easier. Just click it occasionally and follow the sound. The click sound is so loud, not only dogs but human can listen to it from afar, if paying attention to this specific click sound.

I read one story of a blind girl who visited Disneyland. She was afraid of being away from her family so she sticks with someone all the time, but since she and her family have given a pair of clicker, she suddenly running around and start explore the park, clicking her clicker! As long as they are clicking to each other, they know where they are!

Though Daniel and Juan taught me to clap my hands in open space where tongue click is not efficient, clicker would cover much area... it's the magnificent tool for human echolocator!

Daniel Observing Me Trying Clicker

My New Long White Cane -

After Juan and Adam have left, Daniel brogut something for me...

It's a brand new, long white cane!

Daniel Handing Me New Canes

See the difference between my old Japan-sized Japanese cane and my new, American-sized cane!

my new and old canes

The Japanese cane is shorter because it is believed the cane should be thick enough, yet it comes to the height of belly button to chest level to tap the road, whereas the cane Daniel gave to me comes to the height of my nose, designed to slide on the surface to find things on surface, so not indended to apply force to the cane while walking.

my new and old canes

And I ask Daniel how much I owe him for this cane, and he said it is his gift, upon completion of the echolocation and perceptual mobility training - cingratulations!

Daniel and Me Outisde the House with New Long Cane

After this, the cameraman Neil came in and he interviewed me upon completion of the echolocation and perceptual mobility program with Daniel and Juan.

Neil Interviewing Me Outside with Camera

Saying Good Bye -

It's Friday. I would usually say TGIF, but it is time to say good bye to my echolocation, perceptual mobility and blindness orientation instructors, after two-week training session.
First, I say good bye to Adam, who gave me a cooking lesson and some perceptual mobility lessons.

Adam and me standing outside

Then, it is time to say good-bye to Juan, who has been staying with me for the most of the time, sleeping together in the same room at Daniel's house, eat together and worked with my blindness rehabilitation and echolocation. I am honoured to have such a wonderful instructor, as he gave me a kickstart of my recovery processes from blindness!

Juan and me in front of house

Thank you Juan. You successfully rescued one Japanese blind man from darkness!

Saying "Good Bye" to Juan

On the final day of echolocation and perceptual mobility training, Daniel told us, Juan Adam and me, to go outside and play some ball game.

So, here we come! we are at the same Scherer park, getting ready to play succor!

Juan Adam and me Getting Ready for Soccer

... but, we are all blind. How we play succor?

The answer is, the ball is wrapped with a plastic bag, so it makes noise when rolling and kicking.
... What if the ball stopped moving?
Juan says, we must remember where the noise stopped.

Okay, let's play!

Me from above foot on ball

Me kicking a ball. Though I cannot see, I am doing much better than I thought!

Me kicking a ball in the air

Me kicking a ball Juan next to me

As I am getting used to play succor, I started playing more aggressively.
I never thought a blind person like me can enjoy playing succor!

Juan and me Dribbling

It is such a wonderful experience for the blind to find out we can play ball games. World Access for the Blind hosts ballgame sessions for blind people, and I highly recommend it, if there is a chance to participate.

On our way back to Daniel's home, we stopped by Ralph's and grabbed some coke.
For that, Juan told me to lead our way, finding the entrance, find a customer service booth and asked for bottles of regular coke and coke zero.

This becomes the final task given by Juan. , my echolocation and perceptual mobility training is finished.

Blind Cooking Lesson - Pasta -

Tonight's blind cooking lesson features veggie pasta with veggie meat.

Daniel in the Kitchen

The first thing we must do prior to starting cooking is... cleaning the kitchen for movie shooting... by Juan washing dishes from our last meal!

Washing Dishes

We are wondering this is not the usual process for cooking... washing dishes and clean the kitchen before start cooking!?

Daniel Juan and Me Laughing in the Kitchen

After kitchen looks decent (?) the cameraman Neil set up the camera for movie and photo shooting, and we are ready!

Camera Duel?

First, get some vegetable broth for frying vegetable meat. Using it as oil.

R0018568 Daniel Juan Neil and me holding a vegetable broth

Though there is no photo, we put some minced-meet looking minced veggie meat in a pan.
Then, we prepare some veggie sausages by cutting in pieces.
Daniel is standing behind me, instructing me to cut sausages in smaller pieces.

Me cutting sausages Daniel behind

Daniel is checking how I am doing with knife and sausage.
He is blind but there is no hesitation reaching out the food and knife!

Daniel and my hands cutting sausages wider shot

Daniel told me, cut in smaller pieces, and he told me to cut the slice of sausages in half in diameter.

Wait a minute!

I like the sausage in a big chunk! Why he insists I should cut it in very small pieces?

I did not complain and I did what he told me. cut in smaller pieces.

Me cutting sausages

Veggie meat and veggie sausages cut in pieces.
Japanese people tend to consider aesthetic loocs in food presentation when serving, by making food look more sizzling and by its looks, but when it comes to blind people, the look of food does not matter, but the taste and texture does matter, so uneven sizes of cut sausages does not matter much.

Veggie Meat and Sausages Closeup

Then, stir and fry the veggie meat.

Daniel and me Staring Meat in a Pan

Then, cook some spaghetti.
I tried to open the bag nice and neatly, but I failed! These pasta started falling off!
Indeed, opening a bag was a challenge for me as a blind guy still.

Me Trying to Hold Spaghetti

When I am about throw these pasta in, Daniel told me to break it in half.

I asked why.

He told me it reqquires less water and it cooks faster.

I told him I do not want break it in half because the joy of eating spaghetti is rolling the folk to catch the pasta. Also, breaking in half overcooks the pasta.

I have no idea why most Americans I know want to break spaghetti. I admit it is practical in faster cooking time and easy serving, but I never had any pasta cooked right... they are usually overcooked and so soft and soggy, I would not enjoy the texture!

I did not want to be mean, but I put the spaghetti in a way I used to do. putting them by making a twist in a pot. Wish I could show how I do to Daniel...

Then, I told Daniel I love pasta and I used to do this in proper mannar.

... and pasta sauce is done and ready to serve!

Okay, dig in!

After lunch break, I was given two choices: Either I want to keep hiking to the waterfall, or just head back. I chose the latter because mental fatigue already hits me and I am afraid I can no longer echolocate effectively with my brain, though I still have some muscle strength.
Since Juan had energy to go to the waterfall, we spreaded in two groups: Daniel and me heading back the trail, and Juan and the cameraman Neil goes to the waterfall.

Then, I gave Juan a hiking pole, and Daniel and I started heading back the same way we came.

Perhaps Daniel noticed I am so disoriented by excessive fatigue, he offers to lead my way - Grab my backpack!

Daniel Leading My Way Back

Daniel and Me Hiking Back

As I was walking behind Daniel, I felt I am a loser; failed to accompalish the task of going to the waterfall, but Daniel did not blame on me for giving up in the middle.

As we were descending the hill, I noticed Daniel is not clicking his tongue at all!
But he walks as he is a sighted man. Hmmmm...
He told me It seems that he uses other senses like the passive sonar and the feel of terrain from the sole of feet... the total perceptual mobility.

After all, the hiking experience made me realise that echolocation is one of perceptual mobility technique, and with all together, blind people finally can claim the true mobility.
I also learned my shortcomings like mental mapping or drawing a map on my head and memorize it, and I still lose concentration quite easily. My brain is not functioning for blind people needs it to be, so I now have an idea what I have to overcome towards reclaiming the freedom.

Blind Wall Climbing Challenge -

Prior to hiking, Daniel told me we would have stream crossing and we could possible get close to a waterfall... but as I started showing my fatigue by not finding the path with echolocation and my cane, hitting trees and bushes, he changed his mind. - Give up on waterfall, but give me a different task... a wall climbing!

The problem of my perceptual mobility is that it is easy for me to lose concentration, and if I lose it, my brain stopps working, and I cannot straighten out myself, then start doing wrong things.
While I am attentive, I do perform okay, but when I lose concentration, I do terribly with echolocation... cannot listen to echos, cannot process perceptual information,; therefore, I suddenly lose my mobility.

Then, Daniel called out for lunch, but he gave one task... if I climb up on the stone wall!
Does that mean he is challenging me that I won't get some lunch unless I do it?
I cannot see, and how can I find steps to climb up on the wall?

Me climing up a wall

I never thought I would climb the stone wall blind! Daniel told me he would show me how to climb up... but I have no eyesight, how can I see?

Without waiting for me say something, he found some steps on the stone wall and start climbing up, telling me he uses other perceptions especially touching this time. He touches the stones by hands and finding the next step, and bring one foot to the step. For sighted and advantitiously blind people, we wonder how to find the next step without a sight, but Daniel has no problem finding the next step.

... and Daniel shared a trick. He told me to touch his shoe!
He is wearing a light and thin shoe and he is barefooted!

On the other hand, I wore a pair of air cushioned, cross trainers by Nike and a pair of thick sport socks.

Daniel told me how I can feel the ground and terrain by this... I am losing all inportant perceptual information by wearing comfortable, cushioned footware!

Daniel told me he wares Merrell Barefoot series of shoes that are thin and durable, yet machine washable so they are practically designed to ware barefoot.
Daniel told me he should help me get a pair before I go back to Japan...

Daniel and Me eating Subway sandwiches

After all, we climbed up to the top, and found an area we two can sit, and had some subway sandwich!

Then, I noticed that Juan was behind me. Thought he was down at the wall...!?

It turned out that this is a part of a cabin wall, and there is a way around to get to the top, so I actually did not have to climb up the wall to get here!

Oh well, it was hellavan experience but I did not fall off and I enjoyed some thrill of blind wall climbing!

Me climing down the wall

Hiking without Sight, Hiking without a Guide -

I am hiking, with Juan and Daniel Behind!

I thought Daniel was leading our way, but at some point, we switched the role and I am leading the way!

I am walking on a trail with two canes, one on my right for constantly scanning for any obstacles or drop-offs on trail, and the pole on my left to balance my body.
I constantly sclicking my tongue for scanning what's around... I started enjoying the echo of my tongue clicks bouncing off from trees!

There are some other hikers passing by, saying hello.
I wonder what they have thought about us with a white canes to follow the trail?

Blind Hiking - Finding the Path with Echolocation -

Now we are ready to hike!

Daniel and Me with long cane in a Parking lot of Big Santa Anita Canyon

For a while, we walk on a pavement, sliding my cane as I would walk on the street.
Well, it's not really challenging!
The camera crew were following me.

Daniel Neil and me walking

Daniel Juan and me in front of sign

Then, we approached to the branch of trail.
After getting a photo taken, Daniel asuddenly asked me, which way are we going!?

I asked how he can tell where we are going, and he told me he would eventually find it by walking around, but we can make use of echolocation to find out what's around.

Then, our echolocation lesson in the woods begins.

First, he started with mental mapping... where we came from and what options we have.
Daniel clicked his tongue several times, and he explained his first experience at Big Santa Anita Canyon that he lost his way but eventually found his way back, thanks to his mental mapping that he always keeps track of the way so he can go back without confusing.

As an advantitiously blind myself, I still cannot get use to the way Daniel and Juan organises the road and trail information, but Daniel is taking a long time to teach me how he draws the mental map of surroundings.

Daniel drawing a map on my back

Daniel and me at near building echolocating

After working on mental mapping, Daniel told me to echolocate items surrounding me, but I have done such a poor job detecting surroundings... cannot even locate a building!

As Juan patiently and silently waiting for us, Daniel gives me hints of detectingobjects, suggesting me to listen to the echo of my tongue clicks carefully... like asking them and getting a reply - 'wat are you?' 'Where are you?'

Still, it's so overwhelming to me, it sounds like everyone answers to me, not a simple objects!

In fact, I was not only hearing the echo from a single object like a building or a sign, but all the trees surrounding us!

For Daniel or Juan, it's rather easy to detect what's around them, but as for me with underdevelopped distance detection with my limited echolocation capability, I thought all objects are in similar distance, I thought signs area building are blended in woods!

If I get better at detecting distance with echolocation, I should be able to overcome this...

Then, we proceeded to the uneven terrain for 'real' blind hiking...

The Blind Hiking Day - 全盲でもハイキング、しかもガイド無しで。

For this day's echolocation and perceptual mobility training, Daniel said this: We are going to hike today!

Getting ready for a hike outside house

Then, we came to Big Santa Anita Canyon, not too far away from Los Angels.

Unloading a car before Hike at Big Santa Anita Canyon

As we are preparing for a hike at the parking lot, Daniel handed a pole that is much thicker than a long white cane that blind people use to walk.
I asked what it is, and Daniel replied it's a hiking pole, and we use two sticks to hike.

He told me to hold the long white cane as if I walk on the street, and hold a hiking pole in my left hand, at the height of my elbow.
Basically, I suppose to use the white cane to find oncoming obstacles and use the pole in my left hand to stabilise my body.

I asked Daniel how we will find our way, he told me we will find our way! And he also told me I will have to find the way!

Basically, Daniel is saying we will not use any sighted guide to lead our way to hike! Is it possible???Though the film crew were following, they won't involve into any decision making during hiking.
Despite my skepticism about blind hiking, people with no vision leading our way, Daniel pushed my back saying I would become much more confident if I walk in town... after walking uneven terrain, paved roads would become nothing!

Well, let's go!

Me before hike
