Since Blogger decided to dump the more accessible, good ol' interface, I struggle with figuring out how to continue blogging with Blogger...
Anyway, if I update my blog, I would post a photo of me visiting Miyajima, the world heritage, with the torii lantern.
Especially, the wild Miyajima deers welcome me!

Priority Seats on Trains in Kyoto and Osaka -
What I always surprise when I am in Kyoto / Osaka and Tokyo is the availability of so-called priority seats.
They are often available for people with disability, regarding how crowded the train is... And this time is no exception.
This JR train carries full of tourists who are going back to Kyoto. I get on the train last to avoid being pushed or disturbed, expecting to stand whole way to Kyoto, but no one takes the priority seat and standing on the train!
Well, I took the seat and figuring out why the seat is available... do they think there would be someone like me who appreciates the seat, or they have typical Japanese comformity that they should not take a priority seat if no one is taking? It is quite a mystery.

Hiking blind in Arashiyama Monkey Park in Kyoto -
About a month after returning from the echolocation trip in California, my friend from Canada visited Japan with his family members, so I went to Kyoto to meet them
I was expecting to visit some tourists' favourite sightseeing spots like Rokuon-ji Kinkaku or Kiyomizu Temple, they told me they want to see monkeys at Arashiyama Monkey Park!
So, we went to Arashiyama.
And what await us was...
The long and exhaustive length of stone stairs and hills, too harsh for a blind man to take steps!

While walking up on the path, my friend snapped a photo of me walking on a narrow path in autumn colour of Kyoto Arashiyama. I wish I could see the view.

After Climbing up the mountain, I finally arrived at the lookout that is much higher than the height of Kyoto Tower.

... and this is what waiting for me!

A hungry monkey! It was fun feeding him: I could feel him snatching a peanut from my hand!
After having some fun time with monkeys, we took a long and winding road down the mountain.

Walking in Tokyo Shibuya with Echolocation -
One of the things I really wanted to do with echolocation is... to find out whether it works in Tokyo. This time, I came to Shibuya to try it out, by walking from my hotel, crossing the world-famous Shibuya Hachiko crossing, then find the Hachiko statue!
(I was with a friend, but he was only taking photos of me walking, neither directed nor helped in any way)

Basically, all I have to do is walk down the hill, take crosswalks twice then find the statue.
I started clicking my tongue and sliding my long white cane., observing the echo bounced off from buildings and panel signs from my left.
Walking in crowded place is not as tough as I thought because, as my friend says, people who see my white cane voluntarily get out of way!
My cane still do pick up things like sign panels left on the sidewalk, illegalluy @parked bikes, and people feet, but I think I can handle the busy road pretty well if I make use of my tongue click echolocation and a long white cane, they give clear warning.
Now, I am in front of the world-famous Shibuya scramble crossing that people go everywhere. I can't use echolocation technique because there are nothing bounce off from if I make click sounds. Can I make it?

Then, I heard the loud noise of big screen from the back!
If I walk away from it, I am heading to the right direction!
Then, I started walking to cross.

After crossing the scramble crossing safely, I clicked my tongue loud to avoid people and getting close to the Hachiko Statue... and Voila!

After coming to Hachiko, I took a step to find a restaurant, someone stepped on my cane and broke it!
The witnesses told me he ran away as soon as he broke it!
Welcome to Tokyo.
Without cane, I can no longer practise perceptual mobility, so I asked my friend to guide me for the rest of the day.

Flying to Tokyo inn JAL Domestic First Class - JAL
After started getting around with echolocation and some help, I took the challenge: Going to Tokyo!
This time, I accumulated enough milesssss to fly round-trip to Tokyo, I am flying with Japan Airlines.
In mjor airports like Fukuoka, there is a designated check-in counter for passengers with disability. For JAL, it's calld JAL Smile Counter. At check-in counter. It was a busy morning rush hour, ground staff seem to be running around. And a person at check-in counter told me that the flight is full, and they will give me an involuntarily upgrade, though I will not get the normal meal service, which I gladly accepted.
a counter staff did the check-in process, and a JAL ground person guided me to the boarding gate. Not to mention, they were happy to guide me through the airport.

Then, I seated in JAL First Class cabin.
At the cruising altitude, some passengers, who I assume they paid for the first class fare, started receiving breakfast. At the same time, I could tell several people were waiting for food, including myself.

Some noodles!
I started hearing some people slurping, so there must be some people received involuntarily upgrade!
When I leave the airplane, no one saw me off.
Oh well...

Applying Echolocation to Prevent Falling from Platform -
This is what I started doing after returning from echolocation and perceptual mobility training from America: Taking a train by myself!

The good news about the train service in Japan is, a station staff is willing to help me getting on and off the train. The bad news is, they won't help me if they are busy. So, what should I do? Wait until someone frees up? Or... proceed on my own?
I usually ask a staff at a train station to guide me to the correct train and put me on it, but here is an incident I had to go on my own.
At the central exit/entrance of Nishitetsu Fukuoka Tenjin station, there is always a grumpy station staff bumming inside the office. I have asked him to guide me to a train even before I learned echolocation, he never offered me his hands but call up for someone and let him/her guide me.
This day, he did the same thing, called someone up, but no one gets back to him. and he madle told me we can't do it, sounding like he doesn't want to do such a thing.
I called him lazy arse, then I proceeded to the stairs, clicking my tongue loudly.
I knew the express train leaves from the same platform, so I took the stairs up with click of my tongue, then I stand on the platform.
The silence hits me... is there my train on the platform?
If I weren't know echolocation, I would get close to the edge of train platform, trying to touch the train body by my short cane of hands. If I do this, there is always a risk of falling on the train track.
Instead, I clicked my tongue!
Nothing close by, but I heard the echo far away, so I know there is no train at the platform.
Then, a stranger asked me which train I am taking. I told him my destination, and he pointed out the train arrives at the opposit rail track.
I clicked my tongue and found nothing bouncing off from, then tell him it is not there.
Eventually, I heard the train pulling into the platform, heard the chirp from train doors, then I got on the train.
I learned that I, as a blind, always think what if the unexpected happens.. like if someone refuses to help.
I was saved by echolocation, or rather, echolocation helped me travel safely.
I do not blame the one particular Nishitetsu station staff, but glad he gave me a challenge so I find out how I make use of echolocation.

Exploring the Underground Shopping Mall in Fukuoka Tenjin with Echolocation -
Like most other blind people, I was not confident with walking the underground shopping mall because there are so many pillars along the paths, the repetition of stores and crossing aisles easily make us confused.
Before learning echolocation, I was only comfortable using the underground mall for crossing streets, which is safer than crossing streets at the street level, and never thought about walking along the strip of mall, but how the echolocation made me changes???

The Fukuoka Tenjin underground shopping mall features the European atmosphere with dark bricks layd whole way down the strip, making sighted people feel it is dark inside. For people in wheelchairs would make it hard to roll their chairs whth rough surface. Furthermore, blind people find themself getting confused due to the lack of aids like sounds and brail, not many people are happy to come down unless they must... like to take subway lines which are connected by the mall.
What I did as soon as going underground is... click my tongue to study what:s around.
Before, I was told to follow close to the shops to orientating myself. In the past, with a short white cane, I tried my best tracing the edge of the shops with my short cane.
This time, I started clicking my tongue and immediately found three pillars on my right. I also found the glass windows of the shops, so I started walking right in the middle of the pillars and shopping windows, sliding my long white cane!

As I started walking along the aisle, I started finding out lots of thing I have missed in the past... as I was concentrating too much on walking, I never paid attention to what's around!
I noticed someone selling cheesecake, from what she was saying, she was selling a whole cake for take-out at a cafe. I also find some cafes and restaurants along the drag, and some boutiques that salespersons talking with customers. While clicking my tongue as I proceed, I also enjoying hearing people shopping as I smell some bread and coffee, all of the perceptual mobility makes me think the underground shopping mall is not a bad place after all!
With echolocation, it seems that I started walking down the mall like, as if I am seeing these shops, and I had no problem finding the entrance to Fukuoka City Subway station with 'active sonar' of echolocation for finding opening space... and knowing it's a station even if trains are approaching or departing!
Later, I found some coffee shops like Doutor, Starbucks and Saint-Marc under the shopping mall, then I found the way out to the ground level...
Cheers to echolocation!

Returned to Rehabilitation Centre -
A day after I returned from the United States for echolocation and perceptual mobility, I returned to the walfare rehabilitation centre in Fukuoka city for regular rehabilitation program.

The first thing people at the rehabilitation centre noticed was... the shoes I am wearing - the Vebram Fivefingers!

Then, I am returning to the blindness mobility training with my new long white cane and flashy shoes.
I'm about to give the long white cane and a pair of thin-sole shoes a try. How this "perceptual mobility" style that Daniel recommends work in Japan!?

Flying Blind with ANA Domestic flight - A little bits count - 視覚障害者へのさりげない搭乗サポート・ANA国内線
After saying goodbye to the group of ANA cabin attendants, a gentleman who works for ANA helps me go through the immigration and customs. Everything went smoothly, I even did not know when I went through immigration booth because I am taken to an open booth with no obstacles so I just walked straight instead of turning around the narrow aisle.

At domestic check-in counter, I showed my bags of See's Candies' lollipop candies and told I would like to put these bags inside, one of ladies at the counter offered a help!
After re-checking my luggage and requested for an upgrade, I learned that there is the aircraft change, from B737-700 to B767-300 and all Premium Class seats are empty, I am sure I will get an upgrade.
While a lady at check-in counter is processing my check-in, I am taken to the ANA Arrival Lounge and waiting for everything to be ready.
I wish I had enough time to take a shower after a long haul, but since it is just 15 minutes before boarding, I had to proceed to the security check and boarding gate.

Then, I am on the tarmac, ready to board!

On my flight from Tokyo Narita to Fukuoka, a small box of meal is served.

The sandwiches were fit too tight in a compartment, I was spending hard time taking them out. The chief flight attendant saw me struggling with sandwiches, and then...

She asked me if she may use my unopened chopsticks.
I said yes, and what she did was she pulled out sandwich slightly out from the compartment so I can pick it up easily!
I was very surprised by her voluntarily help to make it easier for me, realising ANA staff are really commited to serve passenger any way.
After all, I arrived at Fukuoka airport.
Without exception, I asked for a photo.
The echolocation and perceptual mobility training trip is over, but without great airplane staff, this trip never be impossible.
This is the end of the trip, but also the beginning of my new life as a blind person with echolocation!

A Blind Man's International Flying Experience with ANA - 視覚障害者のANA国際線フライト体験
All Nippon Airways (ANA) offers the priority boarding for passengers with disability. Unlike other airlines, passengers with disability have top priority over the first class and business class passengers. Or it may be only my experience, I am just went through the gate before anyone else.
Though I was offered the priority boarding at the gate, I was the last one getting on the airplane. Just come to think of it, I was taken to the airplane by bus, so I may get on the bus first but I eventually become the last one to get off from the bus!
As soon as I am seated in my premium class, a cabin attendant came to me and offered her help to stow my bag and checked my cane in a cloak. Then she went through the usual procedures of explaining seat belt buckles and confirming the two closest emergency exits.
Soon after getting at cruising altitude, the warm cotton towel followed by snacks and drink service as well as seat power have begun.
I remember Japan
airlines (JAL) stopped offering this welcome snack and drink service and go straight to meal service, I am much favourable that ANA keeps this service, allowing me to greet with other cabin attendants!

My first meal is upgraded, so it is served in ceramic dishes instead of plastic plates.
The trick is, I redeem my frequent flyer mileage to coupons. Since some miles are expiring in a couple of months, I got some coupons prior to this trip for upgrading my meal. A one good way to use accumulated mileage that is not enough to redeem for free flights but coupons.

After meal, some ice cream is offered... Haagen Dazs, as usual for ANA!

Between the long haul, a cabin attendant whispered me if there are any snacks I am interested in, I asked her a can of Pringles, a piece of banana and Pepsi NEX, precisely. It seems that she was impressed by my precise order that ANA offers.
Not forget to mention, they charge me for nothing - it(s all for free, so we should not hasitate asking for them!

A couple of hours before landing Tokyo Narita, the second meal is served.
Compared to JAL's 2nd meal, which was just a pickle and a piece of sandwich, the ANA's meal is far superior, in quantity and quality!

While people are lining up at lavatories getting ready for landing, I asked a flight attendant whether she could fill out my immigration and custom for entry of Japan, and she gladly helped me with these. After getting the forms filled,I have been talking with available cabin attendants about my echolocation and perceptual mobility experience. I also mentioned I am a lucky one whi are surrounded by supportive people like cabin attendants like them, and landing Tokyo Narita is my one big step towards the new world.
About 30 minutes before landing, 5 cabin attendants who are in charge of my cabin came and surround my seat,, giving me a baloon airplane with their signs and messages!
They told me they are not going to read this to me so I should have someone read for me!

At disembarkment, these flight attendants saw me off at the door.
I thanked them again for making it all happened and to be the part of my long journey, walking with echolocation from now on!
