From ANA Check-in Counter to Boarding Bridge - ロサンゼルス空港・ANAでのチェックインから搭乗まで・私辺

While Neil and I were waiting for my check-in process to be done, I am telling him this is the Japanese hospitality..
It seems that Neil was surprised by the service and support provided by ANA, and what's more, no one objected his camera to be entered the ANA check-in area.
Neil and Steve told me before they must shoot with their cameras quickly and sneakingly at public places like airport, or security would kick them out. But there is no worries for this time with ANA!
What's more, ANA staff are very cooperative that they offer to take photos of us!

When this photo is taken, the ANA staff who took this picture told me she will include ANA logo on the screen, and this is the result!



チェックイン手続き中、ニールに、「これが日本のおもてなしだよ」と言ってみせました。
ニールや他のカメラマン・スティーブが言っていましたが、公共の場、特に空港は、撮影用のカメラを持っているだけで周囲に警戒されて、警備員から追い出されるのが、アメリカでは当たり前だと聞かされていました。しかし、ANA係員のみなさんは警戒するどころか、「どうぞどうぞ」というような感じでチェックインカウンター側まで招いてくれました。
さらに、「お二人で一緒に写真を撮りましょうか？」と言ってくれる始末。
ANAのチェックインカウンター横のモニターの横に立ち、ANAロゴが表示されたのを見計らって、この写真を撮ってもらいました。


While talking with few ANA staff, an another staff approached me saying 'Welcome BACK to ANA, we are waiting for you with seat 17G instead of 23D that was showing in our system. I will be your guide, to the boarding bridge,' said Miho, a guide who acted as if she is my concierge.

I told Neil I got a involuntarily 1-class upgrade, and told I shall proceed to the security check. I shaked hands with Neil saying goodbye, and then proceeded to the security check by walking beside her sliding my cane and clicking my tongue,, walking away from Neil and his camera running.

I can tell I am walking beside the long queue instead waiting at the end of it, people waiting for security check, but Miho told me I am walking through the V.I.P lane, which is only open for passengers with airport staff. Therefore, I went through the security check with no wait at all.

チェックインカウンター側で数名のANA係員とおしゃべりしていると、「お待たせいたしました、廣澤様。」という声が。
「ご搭乗をお待ちいたしておりました。これから搭乗までサポートさせて頂きます。本日は座席番号23Dに代わりまして、17Gをご用意させて頂きました。」
ニールに、「これって、遠い言い回しで、アップグレードしてくれた、って意味なんだよ」と言って、彼とはここでお別れ。
Mihoさんというこの方、ロサンゼルス配属４ヶ月目とは思えないほど慣れた感じで、まるで私のコンシェルジュかのように振舞ってくれます。
カメラを構えているニールにさよならを言い、手荷物検査場へ向かいます。

手荷物検査場へと続く通路は、多くの人が並んでいるような感じ。その横を、Mihoさんの横を、を、舌打ちをして白杖を振りながらついていく私。
実は、一般の検査場の横に、VIP用の通路があり、通常はお偉いさんたちが使うほうに案内されているようです。
基本的には、空港の係員が一緒に付いていればいいので、航空会社の上位顧客なども通れるところではあります。実際、私がANAマイレージクラブでダイヤモンド会員だったときは、コンシェルジュが付いてくれて、ここに案内されたことがあります。


After security check, Miho guided me to the Star Alliance Lounge, since I still have 40 minutes before boarding.
At the Star Lounge, an another Japanese-speaking floor staff follows me, and when I sat in a chair, she said to me, 'May I help you?'

The first thing I asked before anything else is... take my photo with her.



手荷物検査を難なくクリアし、次に案内されたのは、スターアライアンスラウンジ。
一応ANAスーパーフライヤーズ会員なので、空港ラウンジは利用できます。
Mihoさんがラウンジ入場手続きをすると、なんと日本語を話す、ラウンジの係員が同行するではないですか！
ソファーに座ると、ラウンジ係員の方が、「ご用件を伺います」とのことだったので、すかさず「写真を撮ってください」と言いました。
そうしてMihoさんと撮ってもらった写真が、上のものです。

Then
The StarLounge staff asks me there are anything I need, I asked her to help me get connected to the internet with my MacBook Pro by helping me enter user ID and password, which she gladly did for me.

Then, I asked if she could bring me something to drink and eat, she brought me assorted snacks to my chairside.
While Miho was checking my flight status, I enjoyed what I am offered.

写真を撮ってもらった後、私のパソコンでインターネットをしたいので、無線での接続を手伝って欲しい旨を伝えると、難なく完了。
「お飲み物はお食事はいかがですか？」とのことなので、適当に持ってくるよう、お願いしました。
全盲でも、ラウンジを使うのは問題ないようです・・・　介助人が同行していなくても、ラウンジのスタッフが助けてくれるということが分かりました。

その間に、Mihoさんはフライト情報の確認に行っていました。



Then, Miho returned with an another man with wheelchair, and she insisted to take the chair to the boarding bridge because the Tom Bradley terminal is under construction and the boarding gate is far at the end of the terminal. Moreover, I am boarding from tarmac and I will be guided by an accessible bus.

I told I could walk with echolocation and cane technique, they really insist it is not good idea to go through some construction sites and I have less than 20 minutes before boarding time, I accepted the offer.

On the way to the boarding gate, I asked them to drop by See's Candies if they See's Candies for purchasing some lollipop candies, and they indeed stopped by a See's Candies kiosk and helped me buying some!

スターラウンジで軽食を取っていると、Mihoさんが車椅子を携えた男性と共に戻ってきました。
Mihoさん曰く、飛行機は地上からの搭乗で、そこまでバスでの案内になること、バスの搭乗口はこのターミナルの一番端であること、そしてターミナルが工事中で危険であることから、車椅子を手配したとのこと。
舌打ち修行と歩行訓練をしたから、大丈夫と言ったのですが、他の方に危害が加わってもいけないということと、搭乗まで２０分を切っていたこともあり、車椅子のお世話になることに。

搭乗口に向かう間に、See's Candiesのロリポップキャンディを買いたいと言ったら、お店に寄ってくれました。しかも買い物に付き合ってくれて、大助かりでした！




When I got on the bus, I finally have a chance to say hello to a guy who has been pushing my wheelchair. He called himself Ricardo and he has moved to America some time ago.

搭乗まで時間が無く、車椅子を押してくれている人に挨拶できたのは、搭乗タラップまで案内するバスの中。彼はリカルドと言い、アメリカに移住して十数年になるとのこと。アメリカに移住してきてから、今に至った話を聞かせてくれました。




After all, we three get acquainted and chatting whole way to the boarding bridge on tarmac.
結局、Mihoさんも加えて３人、空港の仕事などについて話していました。
二人曰く、航空会社の係員と空港で働く介助のための職員とは接点がほとんど無く、私の場合はかなり特殊、というか、手厚いサポートらしいです。
確かに、シカゴの時は空港職員だけでしたし、ダラスやロサンゼルス到着時には、英語が片言の人にガイドしてもらいました。
それに比べると、Mihoさんとリカルドは、すごく親近感がもてました。

Finding a Check-in Counter at LAX - チェックインカウンターを探せ

Neil, the director and cameraman gave me a ride to Los Angels airport.
When I got off his electric car, he told me to find the check-in counter!

I was very surprised! Now Neil is being like Daniel or Juan, telling me to find a counter!

He has been observing my echolocation and perceptual mobility training with Daniel and Juan, he is following the practise that I should apply my echolocation technique at the airport!


カメラマン兼ディレクターのニールに、ロサンゼルス空港まで送ってもらいました。
彼の電気自動車を降りたところ、私のスーツケースを持たされ、「チェックインカウンターを自分で探せ」と、ダニエルやフアンと同じような口調で言います。

確かにニールは、私がダニエルやフアンから受けていたエコーロケーションで、入り口を探したり店を探したりしていることを目の当たりにしているので、どうも私に、この広いロサンゼルス空港で無事にチェックインできるか、試そうとしているわけです。


First, I clapped my hand and noticed I am in the middle of the parking lot, but I could not detect the nearest wall. I clapped my hands again and found an opening in between cars, assuming it is the pathway to the terminal.
When I walk towards the opening, I suddenly started hearing the disturbing, chainsaw noise that drives me totally nuts!
With such a loud noise, echolocation is totally useless, I yelled at Neil that noise drives me nuts!

Then, Neil gave me a hint* It's the noise from gardeners cutting branches, but he told me the direction and encouraged me to walk towards the entrance of the building.

Soon after, one of the gardeners approached, and took my hands to the building. Probably he found me with a white cane being frustrated with the noise.

ターミナルに通じる通路らしき空間を見つけ、歩き始めたその時、いきなり「ウワーン」というけたたましいチェーンソーの音が！
何か木を切っている音がするのですが、あまりにもうるさくて、舌打ちエコーロケーションが全く通じません。
そこで、ニールに「この音は何だ！？」と聞くと、「庭師が木の手入れをしているんだよ」と言って、チェーンソーの音の左側が入り口だから、その方向に向かうように言います。こんな状況下でも、容赦なし。手引きをしてくれません。
すると、すると、スーツケースと白杖を持ってまごついている私を見た庭師が近づいてきて、ターミナルの入り口まで案内してくれました。




I was wondering why Neil didn't help me... but I later learned that he is actually rolling his camera all the time!

When I get in the terminal, I found someone whth a radio. I thought the person must be an airport staff, and I asked where ANA check-in counter is, and she told me I am on the arrival level so I should go one floor up, and told there is an elevator on my left.

I thanked her and I walk towards the left of the aisle, continuously clicking my tongue.

When I heard the echo of my tongue changes from the glass wall to a metal wall, I yelled at the metal door if it is an elevator, and someone nearby replied it is, and he helped me calling a car and press the right button to go upstairs.

国際線ターミナルに入った後、ANAのチェックインカウンターを探します。
建物に入ってすぐ、無線ラジオの音が聞こえたので、すかさずその方向に向かって、「ANAのチェックインカウンターはどこですか？」と聞きます。
すると、女性の声で、「ここは到着ロビー階だから、チェックインカウンターは、一つ上の出発ロビーに上がってください。左側にエレベーターがありますから」と答えてくれました。

ありがとう、と言って、舌打ちをしながら、左手のほうに進みます。左側がガラスの壁らしく、ややソフトな響きが返ってきます。そしてしばらくすると、急に金属らしい音が返ってきました。

そこで、金属に向かって、「ここがエレベーターですか？」と叫ぶと、右側の方から男性の声で、「そうですよ」と返事が来ました。
多分、晴眼者（健常者）から見たら、「なぜあの人はエレベーターの扉に向かって話しているんだろう」と思われたかもしれませんが、ダニエルが先日行っていた、「恥ずかしがることを恐れるな」精神で行かないと、どこにも行けやしない、そう思いました。


When I come up to the departure floor, I asked one person standing right outside the elevator where the ANA check-in counter is, and I was told to go to the counter B.
I do not know where I am, so I asked I am close to which counter, and she said I am right in front of the counter E and D is on my right.

Since I got the information I need, I thanked the lady and start walking to the right.

While walking and clicking my tongue, I found some groups of people, and I did my best manuevering myself with minimal failure... I did bumped my sholder to one Japanese lady and I said 'sumimasen'

Though I was not paying too much attention how many counters I passed by, I asked a person near the counter which counter I am close by, and she said I am at the B counter!

エレベーターで出発ロビー階に上がり、エレベーターを降りたところで、人気がする方向に向かって、「ANAのチェックインカウンターはどこですか？」と聞きます。すると、女性の声で
「ANAはBカウンターですよ」
と言いますしかし、これだけでは私はどの方向に進めばいいかわかりません。そこですかさず、
「ここから一番近いところにあるカウンターは、何ですか？」と
と聞くと、その方は
「目の前はEカウンターで、こちらがDカウンターです。」
と言います。実質、この女性は右側に立っているので、右方向に行けばBカウンターがあることが推測できたので、その人にお礼を言って、右方向に向かうことにしました。
それにしても、晴眼者の人は、盲人に向かって「あっち」とｊか「こっち」とか言うのは、万国共通だな・・・　目が見えないので、あっちこっちでは分からないから、こちら側で推測しないといけないし・・・
でも、アメリカの人は、見知らぬ人に対しても、聞いたことだけを、さばさばと、でも的確に答えてくれます。

そして舌打ちをしながら、右方向を目指します。舌打ちで、ある程度通路で立ち止まっている人を把握できます。
私がロサンゼルス空港で、初めてダニエルに会ったとき、彼が人込みを避けて歩くのを見てびっくりしていたのですが、エコーロケーション訓練後、私もいつの間にか、同じ空港で同じことができるようになっていました。
ただ、一人の日本人女性と肩が触れてしまい、「すみません」と言ったことはありましたが・・・

人込みを避けることばかりに集中し、カウンターの数を気にしていなかった私。ふと泊まって、近くの人に「ここは何カウンターですか？」と聞くと、「Bカウンターですよ」と言うではありませんか！


As I walk towards the check-in counter, a couple of ANA ground staff spotted me with a cameraman following, and they run to give me a hand!

Whoa... one took my suitcase and an another staff took me to... I believe, the first class counter!
I am guessing it was the first class counter because there is only one staff handling all economy class passengers and there is usually one staff for serving Business Class Queue as well. When I was ANA Diamond member, who can use First Class check-in counter, I was handled by two staff, so they might have thought I am a TV star with a film crew or something!

I just handed my passport and ANA Superflyers card, and while they are doing the check-in process, the other ground person offered to take a photo of Neil and me at the check-in counter!



そしてカウンターに向かってゆっくり近づいていくと、カウンター側から２人の係員が出迎えてくれるではありませんか！
「あぁ、これぞ日本の航空会社のホスピタリティだー」と思いつつ、一人の方にスーツケースをお任せして、もう一人の肩が私のパスポートとANAスーパーフライヤーズカードを預かり、カウンターに手続きに向かいます。
そその間、また別の係員が「他に御用はございませんか？」と聞いてきます。
そこでお願いしたのが、ニールと二人で、お別れの記念撮影をして欲しいとお願いしました。
すると、液晶画面の横に立たせてもらい、ANAの飛行機が表示されているときに撮りましょう、と提案を頂きました。
シャッターのタイミングを外すこと数回、やっと取れたのがこの写真です。
後でニールに聞いたのですが、ANA係員の方数名が、微笑みながら見つめていたらしいです。
これが、ANAのホスピタリティだな、と改めて感じさせられました。

そこでふと思ったのが、もしかすると、私が案内されたのは、ファーストクラスチェックイン？
依然、ANAマイレージクラブでダイヤモンド会員だったとき、ファーストクラスチェックインをしたことがあるのを思い出していました。
今はダイヤモンド会員ではないのですが、もしかしたら私がカメラマンと一緒に来たから、有名人と間違えられたのかもしれませんね。

そして、カウンターの方から、私の名前を呼ぶ声がしました・・・

Film Shooting at Long Beach Airport - ロングビーチ空港でドキュメンタリー撮影

A day after the echolocation and perceptual mobility training is over, I found myself at Long Beach airport.
But I am not going back to Japan yet. Then, why I am at the airport?

アメリカ、ロサンゼルス近郊のロングビーチでのエコーロケーションとその他視覚障害者リハビリ訓練が終わった次の日、私はロングビーチ空港にいました。
でも、この日はまだ、帰国の日ではありません。では、一体なぜ空港に？




We are at the airport for shooting a movie clip of the scene Daniel and I are meeting... rather, pretending to meet for the first time!

Though I have some unprofessionally-taken photos of Daniel and me meeting at Los Angels International Airport by a dumb airport ground person two weeks ago, we do not have a movie footage from the scene. Therefore, the cameraman / director Neil suggested that we shall film the scene at nearby Long Beach airport!

ロサンゼルス空港で、初めてダニエルに会った時の風景は、あの役立たず係員に撮ってもらった、ピンボケの写真はありますが、動画としては存在しないので、カメラマン兼ディレクターのニールの提案で、近くのロングビーチ空港でシーンを再現して撮影することに。




Then, we are shaking our hands as if we haven't met before, saying it's nice to meet you!

そして、まるで初めて出会っているかのように振舞う私とダニエルを、ニールが撮影。

After movie shooting, Daniel gave me an assignment: Find the way out and find a car in a parking lot!
Indeed, my echolocation and perceptual mobility training has not finished yet, as long as I am with Daniel... which is indeed a good thing for me!

撮影の後、ダニエルからお題が出されました。「エコロケーションで出口を見つけて、車まで戻ってごらん。」
結局、ダニエルがいる限りは、エコーロケーションの訓練は続くのでした・・・

というのも、全てエコーロケーションと視力障害者リハビリ訓練のため、全米で唯一、全盲の認定視覚障害訓練士であるダニエルの家に、ホームステイさせてもらっているからかなうことであり、この貴重な機会をもてたことに感謝したいと思います。

On the way back, we dropped by a Vietnamiese restaurant for lunch.
I thought this is the end of documentary film shooting, but... Neil will become the one who is seeing me off at LAX.

ダニエルの家へ戻る途中で、ベトナム料理のレストランで、ランチをしました。
カメラマン・ニールとも、これでお別れかと思ったら・・・　これがひょんなことで、彼の家に最終日に泊めてもらうことになり、ロサンゼルス空港まで見送ってくれることになるのでした。
